A Weekend in Brittany, The french “Quebec”

Last week end I had to go to Brittany for the wedding of one of my best friends. I had been to Brittany before but I was little and at the time I had to stay with my parents and the world was really different than it appears to me now.

One thing you need to know about Brittany is that they are like Quebec. They would really like to be independent. In facts, when you go to a restaurant, they won’t serve you classic drinks or water you can find anywhere else in France. They will serve you the Brittany version of it. You will also eat a lot of Crêpes and drink Apple Cider because they are the specialties. Brittany is a fresh air in France.

The first ceremony was in a small town called Etel. It has a smell of holidays. It is a small city near the ocean, it is so cute. Perfect for a wedding!

My boyfriend is a big biking fan, that is why we took our bikes there, just in case we had time between the ceremonies. And we did.

We were near a city called Quiberon, in south Brittany. Quiberon is an “almost island” (peninsula) surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.

We were quite lucky about the weather because three days before we went it was rainy and windy and we only had sun and small wind.

Though the peninsula was fitted out for bikes with bikes roads and direction boards, some parts of this road was to bike on the road… Almost no sidewalks so we had to be careful.

Except from that, biking there is the best thing you could to. In facts, one side of the peninsula is called “The Wild Coast” and it is not for nothing. The wind and the ocean have made their work by digging cliffs of rocks. The view along the way was magical. Quite scary if you go too close.

We had to stop few times to get closer to the edges to take pictures because bikes are not allowed on the cliffs (well, there are a lot of rocks so it might become difficult to bike). It would have been nice to do jogging or just walking along the way but we had limited time and biking allowed us to do the peninsula tour.

Quiberon and the other side of the peninsula are very different from the Wild Coast. It is very touristic and hostels are in view everywhere. Compared to the other side, it is a bit disappointing. I was expecting a less touristic city or at least a city that saved the wilderness. Some of it is preserved at the end of the peninsula but as soon as you get close to the town, it looses some charm.

This part also has more sand and beaches. Maybe this is why it is more touristic.

Oh and wait! An airport that almost lands on the sea allows people to go skydiving. And when the plane lands, it is almost as if it landed on your head! It took us two hours and a half to do the tour.

A part from Quiberon, we also went see the Menhir of Carnac. It is few kilometers away. They are well known for their number and alignments. It is the largest collection in the world. They are arranged from tallest to smallest. The mystery is that we don’t really know what happened for them to be aligned perfectly at the same place and what they were used for. My friends and I have few theories about aliens or giants but i don’t think we will ever know the truth!
